Why are people who accomplish incredible things assholes so often? Or at least they seem like it. Billionaires, for instance, for a cliched example.
How about this; you can't be exceptionally good at anything without being equivalently bad at something else. Why is this true? I have no idea. Is this even true? No idea.
But, it's been my working theory for a while now. And I was reading a little bit of Nietzsche, and he says the exact same thing, but better and more badass, of course. Every talent is a vampire that sucks the blood and strength from other power.
Earlier, Nietzsche also says, "We deem it very useful when one person throws all their strength into one thing and makes themself into a monstrous organ." We exist in a system, and I don't know if it's culture or human nature at large, where we reward people who are putting all of their efforts into single endeavors. We don't value being well-rounded. We value being fucking obsessed.
Anyway, I pity the people who are out there revolutionizing an industry or the world or whatever the fuck. They may not be, but they are broken, or out of balance anyway. But I really don't think they could be anything else and keep the genius that we value them for.
