Cricket on the Hearth
Published at : September 15, 2021
Listening to an old-time fiddler from Virginia, Roscoe Parish (1897-1984), I came up with a different version of Cricket on the Hearth than one I had learned listening to a famous bluegrass fiddler from Kentucky, Kenny Baker. Same basic tune, but different styles of playing. The tune is also related to Marmaduke’s Hornpipe and is currently being discussed on Banjo Hangout’s Tune of the Week. It’s one of the things I like about this genre of music — variety and individual expression is the welcomed norm.
